What qualifications/skills do I need to become an Artist/Animator/Concept Artist?
Qualifications are not a necessity for any Graphics position at Rare; what we do look for is talent, dedication and enthusiasm for the job and industry itself. We will always ask to look at a portfolio of your work (as opposed to a list of qualifications), as a means of judging your ability and what type of work you would be best suited to.
There are various roles within our Graphics department, the following should give you some idea of the skills valued in each of them: |
Character Modellers
Must be able to work with concept artwork and imagination in producing high-quality models. Experience in texturing, material mapping and general setup for character animation required. Must have a good eye for style and anatomy, plus an understanding of efficient hi/lo-res model building.
Animators
A strong understanding of traditional skills is essential, plus the ability to express dynamic character animation. Experience with computers is not essential but is a plus.
Object Modellers
Must have commitment, ability to communicate and a passion for games. Proficiency in Photoshop (for 2D texture maps) and an industry-standard 3D package (e.g. Maya/Max/Lightwave) required. Also experience with setting up joint systems and binding prior to animation would be useful.
Background Modellers
Must be versed in modelling, texturing, lighting and composition to optimise screen space. Creativity and passion plus strong technical and artistic abilities are vital, with an emphasis on layout, landscape sketches and paintings/colour studies.
Concept Artists
Requiring traditional artistic skills with a good grasp of anatomy, architecture, technical and graphic design and colour theory, plus the ability to adapt to different styles. Good communication skills are important, as is an interest in all forms of visual media. |
