STAFF PROFILE: NICK, GAMES PROGRAMMER

What is your background?

After completing an Honours Degree in Computing Systems with a major in computer graphics in 1994, I stayed on at The Nottingham Trent University to pursue Medical Imaging Research. After 4 years researching 3D Volume Visualization and Surface Reconstruction, funding dried up and I started looking for non-academic work, specifically in the games industry. I've always loved computer games and I suppose it's what made me choose computing as a career, when I was a child I'd always wondered how games worked and what went on inside the 'box'.

How did you get to work at Rare?

Back in 1994, as my degree was nearing completion, I had started to think about what kind of computing job I would like to do. I kept coming back to the games industry which offered some great opportunities and seemed to be maturing into a highly dynamic business. I was actually offered a job at Rare at this point but decided to continue my education, so it was a natural decision to re-apply in 1998 as I had always held Rare in high regard as one of the best game developers in the world. Fortunately for me I was again offered a job and have been at Rare ever since.
