STAFF PROFILE: ANDY, GAMES PROGRAMMER

What is your background?

Like millions of other people worldwide, I've been playing computer games since I was very young. I'm not sure when I first consciously decided to follow a career making games but I think it was always an option in the back of my mind; certainly right up until the end of my A-levels I had deliberately chosen not to specialise in anything to allow myself as much choice as possible. I then took a four-year MComp in Computer Science at Loughborough University, again as I felt this gave much greater freedom than a more specific games-related degree.

How did you get to work at Rare?

In my final year at University I was applying for a number of jobs at games companies across the country. I was lucky enough to land interviews at three different companies, which seemed to be an achievement in itself as just about every other employer wanted prior experience in the games industry which, of course, I did not have. Rare was the second interview I attended and the moment I arrived on-site I knew that this was the place I wanted to work. The setting, the atmosphere, the professionalism of the people and of course the history of this company appealed to me very strongly. I was very excited to be offered the job and I accepted without a moment's hesitation.
