STAFF PROFILE: URBAN, STG PROGRAMMER

What is your background?

In the spring of 1998 I had just finished 15 months of military training, as a lot of young men do in Sweden. With nothing else to do I joined a training programme at a local company. The training included object oriented programming and C/C++. Since I had applied at random to a few Master Programmes throughout Sweden, I only completed the C part and some OOP before moving 120km to attend an MSc in Media Technology and Engineering.

What attracted me to the programme were the words 'Computer Graphics' and I suddenly thought computer graphics and maths had nothing to do with each other. It turned out that CG was very math heavy, but since it also was very much a pleasure to read the math got easier to bear with and a love grew between me and mathematics.

How did you get to work at Rare?

After 6 years, many exams passed and many games played, I was finishing my thesis and noticed that Rare was hiring STG Software Engineers. My thought was: "Wow, that’s exactly what and where I would like to work", and I didn’t think more of it. A few months later, having seen the ad in the same magazine a few times, I decided to send an letter of application, a CV and a link to my work samples accumulated over 6 years at a university (not necessarily studying all the time).
